How To Protect Your Home While On Holiday

Heading off on holiday is a pretty exciting time. Being able to get away from everyday life for a while to relax, see some new sights and explore is a great way to refresh and take a break from everything. It’s understandable though that you might worry about your home while you’re gone. Rather than spending your entire holiday worrying about whether your home and belongings are safe or not, there are some measures you can take that will help to put your mind at ease. Take a look here at our top ways to protect your home while on holiday.

1. Put Your Lights On A Timer

A house that is dark with no lights on in the evenings is a dead giveaway to potential thieves that no one is home, making the home a great target. However, if the lights are on, there’s a good chance that someone is home, making the house a much less tempting option. Invest in an electrical timer that will intermittently turn your lights on and off to make it look like someone is home.

2. Hire Someone To House Sit For You

If you’re worried about leaving your home unattended, you can get someone to house sit your home for you, or to pop by regularly to check that everything is in order. A house sitter will make it look like someone is home, deterring criminals, and they will also be able to take care of your plants and pets for you as well, which is an added benefit.

3. Ensure Your Security System Is Functional And Can Be Accessed Via Your Smartphone

Having a good CCTV security system set up at your home is a fantastic way to deter criminals and keep your home safe. A good system will also provide you with the ability to see your property in real-time from your smartphone and alert you if any sensors are tripped or motion detected.

4. Ask Your Neighbours To Use Your Driveway

A simple way to help protect your home while you’re on holiday is to ask your neighbours to temporarily park in your driveway. Vehicles that are coming and going from your home will make it appear like people are home and active.

5. Don’t Post On Social Media About Your Holiday Until You're Back

Unfortunately, sometimes the people we know in our day to day lives are the first to take advantage of an opportunity when it presents itself. When you’re posting on social media about your amazing trip and how much fun you’re having, you’re telling people that your home is currently unoccupied and ripe for the taking. Hold off on posting those enviable holiday snaps and updates until you’re home.

6. Trim Your Lawn And Gardens

An unruly garden and a lawn that is looking a little on the wild side is a sure sign that a house is probably unoccupied. Take the time to mow your lawns and trim back your gardens before you go to leave your home looking maintained and well cared for.

7. Remove Your Spare Key And Have Your Mail Paused

A spare key under the pot plant or mail that is piling up on your doorstep or in your mailbox is practically inviting intruders into your home. Before you head off on holiday, be sure to remove any spare keys from your property and organise to have your post either redirected or paused.
